Duivelsklauw komt voor in de kalahari–woestijn, en in Namibië, de vruchten zijn bedekt met op klauwtjes lijkende kleine haken, vandaar de naam. De werkzame bestanddelen in de knol van de plant heten gluco-irodoïden.
